Renske de Vries | Liebesheirat oder Vernunftehe? – The Unification of the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin 1989-1993

Summary

This research analyses the unification process of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin between 1989 and 1993. Following the national unification of Germany, both the AdK-Ost and the AdK-West aspired not to be subjected to an institutional unification. However, the eventual dissolution of the AdK-Ost cancelled other future scenarios. This unification touches on multiple dimensions of German unification, including the position of artists and intellectuals in East and West Germany during national unification; the German-German art debate; and the representation of East Germany in united Germany since 1990. In the available literature on the Akademie der Künste and the national unification, however, little attention has been paid to the unification of the AdK-Ost and AdK-West. Therefore, this thesis will analyse how the experiences of the members of both academies as well as external influences affected the unification process of the AdK. To do so, this research will provide a reconstruction of the unification process based on institutional documentation, newspaper articles, and the accounts of artists and politicians.
